About the Studies in Mormon History Database

This database is maintained by James B. Allen, BYU Professor of History emeritus, and J. Michael Hunter of the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University. It serves as an enlarged edition of James B. Allen, Ronald W. Walker, and David J. Whittaker, Studies in Mormon History 1830-1997: An Indexed Bibliography (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 2000). We thank John W. Welch, editor of BYU Studies, for working with the University of Illinois Press to get the copyright returned to us.

The database is being updated constantly. So far as possible, it includes articles, books, theses, and Ph.D. dissertations dealing with the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, written from the time of its inception in 1830 to the present. Since it is intended as a guide to responsible historical scholarship it does not, for the most part, include highly pejorative works, though it does include controversial works that still have historical substance or interest.

The original print edition of the bibliography contains Armand L. Mauss and Dynette Ivie Reynolds, "A Topical Guide to Published Social Science Literature on the Mormons." All entries from this guide that are of substantive interest to historians can be found in the current database using the subject term "Sociological studies." The guide itself is not being enlarged, but as we find sociological studies that are of historical substance (even tangentially) we include them under the same subject heading.

The online edition of this bibliography also contains entries from "Mormon Diaries: An Annotated and Indexed Bibliography of Published Mormon Diaries and Journals" by J. Michael Hunter, Jennifer J. Bussio, John E. Fahey, and Russell Stevenson. These entries are found under the subject term "Diaries and journals."

For insight into the development of Mormon historiography, you are encouraged to obtain a copy of Ronald W. Walker, David J. Whittaker and James B. Allen, Mormon History (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 2001), which also contains an essay on social science literature by Armand L. Mauss. This publication is online at www.press.uillinois.edu/epub/books/walker.

We earnestly ask for your support and help in keeping this database up to date as well as accurate. We may well miss some items that should be there, and we also recognize that there will, inevitably, be mistakes. If you know of any books, article, theses or dissertations that are not listed here, please notify us so that we can including them. Also, if you find any mistakes we invite you notify us so that we may correct them. You may contact us by sending an email to mormonhistory@byu.edu.
